Michael Shannon in Take Shelter

**Spoiler Alert**

Best performance of 2011, easily. If you haven’t seen Take Shelter find it and watch it now!

Back at it again

I’m back from Sundance 2012… I love that place and I’m gonna post about being there for the first time soon. Meanwhile, I’m back teaching again while I put a few last touches on my script… before I send it out!

As I was preparing for the semester (two undergrad editing courses and one grad ‘directing the actor’ course) I stumbled across this archive of actor audition reels.

I thought it was kind of cool and also a good resource for directors observing performance…

(side note: After teaching ‘acting for directors’ for a few years, I’ve found this is the hardest thing for inexperienced directors to do: to see what actors are actually doing in their performance versus what the director wants or hopes to see… this is a learned skill, observing performance.)

Now, I don’t necessarily believe auditions are final “performances” by any means but it’s nice to watch these actor’s “choices” as they came in to be seen for and land some iconic roles.

Hollywood’s Racism Against White People

Up late writing.

I have less than a week to go before my reading. Looking for stuff on the internets to distract from the butterflies.

This is funny. It’s subversive in a couple of ways, well done Ms. Skinner.

Oh, and I found this on Ta-Nahisi Coates’s blog – go read the comments – I love how some folk had no idea who Tyler Perry was…

-this is who he is in case you also don’t know-

Midway

Here’s a short film from friend and collaborator Darius Clark Monroe. I appeared in this film as an actor and also edited the picture.

Film 1

This short experimental vid features a former acting student of mine, Iva Gocheva. It was directed by Martin De Thurah.
